As promised, I made the trek down to Westboro on Saturday afternoon to check out the Westfest action along Richmond Road. There were lots of people there despite the threat of rain and lots of activities to choose from, including shopping, buskers and, of course, live music on numerous stages. The highlights of the day were the evening concerts on the main stage. Brock Zeman started off the evening with a solid set of his own special country/folk/blues. Next up was rising artist Shawnee with a powerful show mixed with punchy soul and powerful country rock. I really enjoyed her show and plan to watch her as I expect her star will be rising quickly now that she has released her first album on iTunes. The closer for my night was The Peptides and they put on a highly choreographed, very polished performance – almost like a mini musical play. It makes me wonder how I’ve managed to miss seeing this great, funk energetic, quirky, local group before now. It was a fantastic performance and great end to the day (If you are interested, they’re playing two free Canada day concerts at the NAC).
Today I will be back at Westfest again, enjoying a beautiful sunny day and taking in concerts by FEVERS, LAST SUPPER and GOOD2GO.
